Turkish FM Warns of Middle East War Expansion
Speaking to the A Haber news channel, Fidan said Türkiye’s primary goal from the outset has been to prevent the outbreak of war, halt it if it occurs, limit its spread, and keep the country out of the conflict.
“Our number one goal is to stop the war. At the same time, it is important that it does not expand further. It is crucial that it does not spill over into other countries and does not create lasting hostilities and instability in the region. Hopefully, it will end one way or another,” he said.
Fidan emphasized that hostilities between nations can persist for years after a conflict, hindering cooperation, development, and prosperity, noting that “all our efforts are aimed at preventing” the war.
He added that other parties recognize the risks posed by the conflict and confirmed that negotiations to end hostilities have begun.
“There seems to be some progress in negotiations. At least talks have started. Messages are being conveyed via Pakistan. The Americans are coordinating this with us, and we are informing the Iranians,” Fidan said.
The foreign minister also stressed that while there is strong international demand for negotiations, this must translate into concrete measures, and Türkiye is making every effort in that direction.
Fidan noted that diplomatic engagement has intensified since the early stages of the crisis, with officials from Europe, Russia, China, and other Asian countries frequently contacting Türkiye to understand developments and explore ways to stop the conflict.
He warned that the US and Israeli attacks on Iran are having severe regional and global consequences, cautioning that the “war initiated unlawfully by the US and Israel, in violation of international law, is increasingly facing the danger of regional expansion.”
