Twenty-Two Dead After Migrant Boat Rescued Near Crete
The vessel was first spotted early Friday by the EU border agency Frontex, and 26 people aboard were taken to the port of Kaloi Limenes.
Survivors said 48 people had been on board when the boat left Libya six days earlier.
Due to harsh weather conditions, the vessel drifted for several days, during which 22 passengers died and their bodies were reportedly thrown into the sea.
Two suspected operators of the boat, both South Sudanese and aged 19 and 21, were identified and arrested on suspicion of human trafficking during the preliminary investigation.
