Blast Claims Two Lives in Ukraine's Kharkiv High-Rise Building

(MENAFN) At least two fatalities and multiple casualties resulted from an explosion that tore through a residential tower in northeastern Ukraine's Kharkiv on Saturday, local officials reported.

Kharkiv Mayor Igor Terekhov verified the blast occurred within a civilian neighborhood zone.

"As a result of an explosion of unknown origin, we have dead and injured people in a high-rise building in the Saltivskyi district," Terekhov stated via Telegram.

Preliminary accounts documented deaths, though Terekhov subsequently issued revised figures after rescue teams retrieved a second victim's remains from the debris.

Emergency response crews continue executing search and rescue missions while investigators work to determine circumstances and identify the explosion's source.

Kharkiv, Ukraine's second-most populous urban center, sits roughly 30 kilometers (19 miles) from the Russian frontier and has endured relentless bombardment since Moscow's military offensive commenced in February 2022. The Saltivskyi district represents a heavily populated residential zone that has sustained extensive infrastructure devastation throughout the ongoing conflict.
