Severe Storms Deepen Gaza Suffering as Shelters Destroyed

(MENAFN) Brutal winter storms have ravaged makeshift encampments throughout the Gaza Strip, compounding the shelter crisis for thousands of displaced families as frigid conditions intensify, the UN agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA) reported.

Israeli authorities persist in preventing UNRWA from delivering critical aid directly into Gaza, including essential shelter materials required by hundreds of thousands affected by severe weather, the agency announced Wednesday on US social media platform X.

"Tents and tarpaulins are desperately needed," UNRWA emphasized, warning that families remain dangerously exposed to brutal elements.

The agency demanded that humanitarian relief be permitted entry into Gaza without obstruction.

UNRWA was created by the UN General Assembly over seven decades ago to support Palestinians forcibly expelled from their homeland.

An October 10 ceasefire agreement ended Israel's two-year military campaign that claimed over 71,200 Palestinian lives—predominantly women and children—wounded more than 171,200 additional victims since October 2023, and reduced the territory to rubble. However, despite the truce, Israel's lethal strikes on Gaza persist.

According to Gaza's Health Ministry, since the ceasefire took effect, at least 414 people have been killed and over 1,100 others wounded.

The convergence of severe weather and ongoing violence has created catastrophic humanitarian conditions, with displaced populations left vulnerable to both natural elements and continued military operations. Families sheltering in damaged tents face torrential rains and powerful winds without adequate protection, while blocked aid convoys prevent relief supplies from reaching those most in need.
