Israel Continues Killing Palestinians in Gaza Despite Peace Calls

(MENAFN) At least six Palestinians were killed and many more injured on Sunday in ongoing Israeli airstrikes on the Gaza Strip, despite Israel's claims of reducing its military operations. According to medical sources and eyewitnesses, Israeli forces targeted residential buildings and tents sheltering displaced families across various parts of the region, which has been enduring a two-year-long campaign of destruction.

The strikes occurred after US President Donald Trump expressed his belief on Friday that Hamas is "ready for lasting peace" and urged Israel to halt its bombing campaign in Gaza to allow the release of Israeli prisoners.

The violence resulted in the deaths of four Palestinians, who were waiting for aid near the US-Israeli distribution hub in the Shakoush area, northwest of Rafah. Since May 27, Israel has been facilitating aid distribution through the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation—an effort rejected by the United Nations—though many Palestinians view the distribution points as "death traps." Israeli forces have frequently targeted these areas, resulting in numerous casualties.

Israeli drones also dropped explosives on tents housing displaced families east of Asda, near Khan Younis, further contributing to the mounting toll. Meanwhile, artillery fire shelled central Khan Younis, and airstrikes hit the northern parts of the city.

Additional attacks included a strike on residential buildings in the Sabra neighborhood of Gaza City, where one Palestinian was killed and others wounded when Israeli forces hit the upper floors of several buildings on Al-Thalathini Street. In central Gaza, one Palestinian was killed and several others injured while waiting for aid near the Netzarim distribution hub. Israeli artillery also targeted Al-Azhar University and the eastern Al-Maghazi refugee camp, while northern Gaza's Al-Bureij camp was shelled.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office announced on Saturday that Israel was prepared to move forward with the first phase of Trump’s plan, which calls for the immediate release of Israeli prisoners. According to Israeli military and media reports, political leadership has ordered the cessation of the Gaza City occupation and a reduction of military activity to only defensive operations.

Trump’s 20-point peace plan, unveiled on September 29, includes provisions for the release of Israeli captives, a halt to hostilities, and the disarming of Hamas. Israel believes that 48 Israeli prisoners are being held in Gaza, including 20 who are alive. At the same time, around 11,100 Palestinians are imprisoned in Israeli jails, facing harsh conditions, torture, and medical neglect, with many reported dead.

Since October 2023, the Israeli military has killed over 67,000 Palestinians, the majority of whom are women and children. The sustained airstrikes and bombardment have left Gaza virtually uninhabitable, causing widespread starvation, disease, and suffering.
