Senior ISIS Leader Gets Killed in Cross-Border Operation

(MENAFN) Iraq’s elite Counter-Terrorism Service announced on Friday that, in collaboration with the US-led alliance, it eliminated Omar Abdul Qader Bassam—also known by the alias "Abdulrahman Halabi"—a high-ranking commander within the ISIS extremist organization, who was accused of orchestrating assaults in Lebanon, Europe, and the United States.

In its official statement, the service confirmed “the success of a new qualitative operation that resulted in the death of terrorist Omar Abdul Qader Bassam, known as ‘Abdulrahman Halabi,’ one of the most prominent leaders of ISIS gangs,” as cited by an Iraqi news agency.

The mission was executed early Friday morning inside Syrian territory, in collaboration with international coalition units, according to the statement.

The agency detailed that Halabi held key responsibilities for ISIS's external missions and internal security, specifically focusing on managing and organizing the so-called “remote provinces.”

Additionally, he played a central role in orchestrating the bombing of the Iranian diplomatic mission in Lebanon and was actively engaged in plotting terrorist attacks across Europe and the US—many of which were prevented due to accurate intelligence operations, the statement said.

The news agency highlighted that this targeted strike constitutes a “major strategic loss for the terrorist gangs,” following a sequence of effective operations over the last two months that resulted in the deaths of more than six high-level ISIS figures.
