Video shows TikTok employees disclosing danger of platform on teenagers

(MENAFN) A recently unsealed video in a North Carolina lawsuit shows current and former TikTok employees privately expressing concern about the platform’s effects on teenagers, warning that its design promotes compulsive use and could harm young users’ mental health.

The footage, made public Tuesday by Superior Court Judge Adam Conrad and reported Wednesday, features staff discussing how TikTok’s algorithm can encourage addictive behaviors and potentially push teens toward harmful content.

The lawsuit, originally filed by then-Attorney General Josh Stein and now overseen by his successor Jeff Jackson, alleges that TikTok engaged in unfair and deceptive practices by making the app “highly addictive to minors” while misleading parents about its safety.

Judge Conrad denied TikTok’s request to dismiss the case and keep the video sealed, stating that potential “embarrassment” for employees does not outweigh the public’s right to access.

In the video, Nicholas Chng, a former risk detection employee, said the platform “encourages some of this content being put up just because of the way the platform is designed.”
