Germany pursues secret deal with US to transfer wapens to Ukraine

(MENAFN) Germany is reportedly pursuing a discreet agreement with the United States to purchase two Patriot air defense systems, which it intends to transfer to Ukraine, according to a report by a newspaper citing government insiders.

Earlier this week, multiple US media outlets reported that Washington had paused shipments of key munitions to Kiev, including Patriot and Hellfire missiles, GMLRS rockets, and thousands of artillery shells. The White House later confirmed a partial freeze on weapon deliveries, stating that the move was made to prioritize America’s own strategic interests.

This halt in aid has raised concerns in Berlin, Bild noted on Thursday, with Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s administration worried that the US might also decline Germany’s request to buy Patriot systems and interceptor missiles.

Sources told Bild that Germany quietly approached US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth about the matter roughly two weeks ago after Ukraine itself was unable to secure the systems independently. Berlin is reportedly awaiting a response.

The newspaper highlighted the critical shortage of air defenses as an urgent issue for Ukraine, noting the country currently operates only four Patriot systems and faces a shortage of missiles. A depletion of interceptors would increase the risk posed by Russian air attacks.

On Friday, German government spokesperson Stefan Kornelius confirmed that “intensive discussions” are underway between Berlin and Washington about possible ways to provide Ukraine with air defense systems and related ammunition, though he indicated that several options are being considered.

According to a news agency, Ukraine was caught off guard by the US aid freeze and has since asked Washington to allow European countries to purchase American weapons for Ukraine. Several European nations are reportedly evaluating potential arms acquisitions on Ukraine’s behalf.
